My presentation will address the adoption of news and social media in investment and trading functions. Over the last decade, financial firms have begun embracing alternative sources of information to make investment and trading decisions. These sources range from traditional newswires to micro blogs such as Twitter. In particular, machine-readable news and structured analytics have already made their way into quantitative and algorithmic trading programs. Some of the largest and most sophisticated hedge funds, asset managers, and banks have started using “news analytics” in alpha generation and risk management. But how widespread is the adoption of these new technologies and data sources? How much value do they add? And how is this new and exciting field expected to evolve? These are just a few of the topics I plan to address in this session.
